Saint Gengoux is een prachtig middeleeuws stadje met in het centrum een kerk uit de 12e eeuw. Het is gelegen aan de Route des Vins du Mâconnais-Beaujolais, maar ook op de GR7, die ten dele samenloopt met de pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostella. De stad stelt zich zeer Europees op, wat ondermeer tot uiting komt in een stedenband met Weisenheim Am Berg (Duitsland – Rijnland-Palts). St Gengoux is ook de hoofdstad van een district van 19 steden. Op elke 1e en 3e dinsdagmorgen van de maand vindt er een markt plaats in het hart van de stad, en in het hoogseizoen is dat elke dinsdagmorgen.

De oudste resten van de stad dateren uit de Merovingische periode. Tot het jaar 1000, ontwikkelt de stad zich onder een onbekende naam. In 925 zetten de Benedictijnen van Cluny de kerk onder het beschermheerschap van St. Gengoul (vandaar de naam van de stad). Een paar jaar later, is de kerk aangeboden als geschenk aan de monniken van Cluny. In 1120 wordt er een nieuwe kerk gebouwd. In 1166 worden Saint Gengoux en zijn omgeving verkocht aan koning Lodewijk VIII. In 1200 verleende de Koning een koninklijke status aan de stad waardoor de stad in 1246 Saint Gengoux le Royal gaat heten. In 1793, na de revolutie wordt de stad Jouvence genoemd. Deze naam heeft de stad niet lang gedragen. In de restauratie (de periode 1814-1830 in Frankrijk, waarin de Bourbon-dynastie hersteld werd na de nederlaag van Napoleon) krijgt de stad haar oude naam terug. Vanaf 1870 krijgt de stad haar definitieve naam: Saint Gengoux de Nationale nemen.
